Honey, I’m home!

I thought about putting my bike on the back of the car, but decided it was overkill.

I thought about putting my bike on the back of the car, but decided it was overkill.

Nine days ago, I trundled into Rockport in a rented truck, towing my car. It was a fourteen-hour drive, but the end of a multiple-year process. After painting and teaching here for several summers, I knew I wanted to live here full time.

I’m a wife and mother. I had a busy teaching practice in my Rochester, NY studio. I am blessed with a multitude of wonderful friends. But my painting heart beats to the surf. While Rochester is beautiful, it doesn’t have tides.

A FitzHugh Lane Day at Camden Harbor, 12X9, Carol L. Douglas.

I’ve been blogging for eight years, and my Blogger readers know me pretty well. I learned to paint from my dad, and I took further classes at the Art Students League in New York City. Art is both my vocation and my passion.

A cat drawn by Dr. Amy Vail after one three-hour drawing class. Amy made the mistake of telling me she ‘lacked the gene’ to draw.

Many people have the idea that making art requires some kind of special gnosis, a mysterious talent that only a few of us are lucky enough to share. But before the advent of the camera, everyone had to know how to sketch at least a little, if only to explain to their spouse where they wanted the flower beds. That capacity didn’t suddenly disappear.

I’ve got to unpack this before I can get down to the docks to paint, though.

My goal is to share the process and the passion of painting with as many people as possible. I’ll be posting daily, Monday to Friday, about the craft and culture of modern painting. I hope you enjoy it.
